Debbie Smith Interview
Sunday Sep 06, 2015
Sunday Sep 06, 2015
Guitarist, purveyor of feedback, composer, DJ, possessor of great hair and provider of luscious six-string noise with Curve, Echobelly, Snowpony, Ye Nuns, The London Dirthole Company and Blindness is welcomed into the studio in this very special instalment of The Dukey Radio Show.
The pair discuss the musician’s "Autobiographical Playlist" featuring six songs that have been pivotal in Smith’s life. From viewing the guitar as a substitute for a bow and arrow as a young child to enjoying the best and the worst of times while brandishing a Fender around her neck during the height of BritPop – Debbie is candid and captivating in equal measure. And in this insightful interview, the North London native explains just why, as an underaged lesbian in 1980s London, she shared a squat with the staff of her favourite Kings Cross club. That precocious dedication eventually saw her touring the world with Curve while barely being out of her teens.
- Discover how Old Tart’s Song by Poison Girls helped our guest to confront early issues with her sexuality.
- Find out how a tender Cat Stevens track provided Debbie with a decidedly dapper nickname.
- Delve into the delicate balancing act of Smith’s current involvement with four bands.
- Funeral festivities are given a dash of fun as our guest reveals the tune she’d like to be (add name of body disposal technique here) to.
- “Guitar geekery” features heavily as Dukey and Debbie chat about the creation of her custom made signature instrument from Ayers Guitar Co. called “The Smith”.

Oestrogen is East
Sunday Aug 02, 2015
Sunday Aug 02, 2015
The theme of this episode is "Oestrogen is East". We're celebrating some of the great female fronted acts that our Dukey has recently seen and/or worked with. There’s also an interview with Mz. Moxy and brilliant new music from Deux Furieuses, Blindness, Allegra Shock and No Girlfriends. Interspersed with witty banter. In addition:
- Find out how to NOT treat a Shoegaze/Indie guitar legend at a soundcheck.
- Discover if greeting your significant other while starkers and brandishing a lager (and football scores) can improve your relationship.
- Walk down the dark corners of Memory Lane with Mz. Moxy as she compares a snooty fellow female musician with the teacher she despised the most at school. Warning: You'll never look at "Bingo Wings" in the same way again. The American transplant to London also reminisces about children collecting human heads at her local New Jersey beach and explores how "Peep Show" & "Partridge" have been utilised to help her understand British people a little bit better.
- Consider whether playing a famous musician's instrument can be described as a "collaboration" with the person of note.
- Pontificate at the ludicrous idea of a "Who is more posh?" battle in "Posh Pit".
- Contemplate whether the word vagina should be used in more band bios.
- Observe how Dukey came up with some rude pronunciations of Deux Furieuses prior to finding out how to (nearly) say the band's name correctly.
- And marvel at Sylvia's impression of Mz. Moxy's vocal style.

Sylvia's Cycles
Monday Jul 06, 2015
Monday Jul 06, 2015
The Tour de France is in full swing but a different type of pedalling based human endeavour is being celebrated in this instalment of The Dukey Radio Show. Our very own Sylvia is participating in the world famous sporting event in her own special way. The fact that it involves a stationary bicycle that powers the television she’s watching the coverage on is merely a small detail. At least she’s not mainlining EPO. That said, our lisping heroine does have a long history of taking in potentially toxic substances. The most notable being David Hasselhoff’s early acting career.
In addition:
- The razor voiced Marsha examines ice fingers in a new segment entitled “What is it about?”
- Exotic Dancing in Bangkok causes a surprising reaction in “Posh Pit”
- “Scintillating Situations in Your City” investigates a giant puppetry festival in France and a newly released biopic on the late Amy Winehouse
- The reality of scary feet gets Marsha’s heart pounding in “Overheard”
- Freshly back from Glastonbury, Slutty Sue helps a fellow festival goer with his tent
All of this and ever so slightly more in "Sylvia’s Cycles".

Spec & Span
Monday Jun 22, 2015
Monday Jun 22, 2015
The seemingly disparate worlds of ornithology and industrial car cleaning are explored in detail in this instalment of the Dukey Radio Show. Alongside NHS specs, period knickers, the dangers of combining Newcastle Brown with Jägermeister and how our host embodied his “Inner Alex” while watching the new series of “Orange is the New Black”.
In addition:
- - In “Posh Pit”, Dukey’s encounter with a random stranger at a gig puts a certain type of songwriting technique into question. You’ll never listen to La-La-La or Oooh-Oooh-Oooh parts in the same way again.
- - In “Overheard”, Marsha & Sylvia discuss how mustard may change your life for the worse.
- - Slutty Sue leaves her pristine abode for the Anti-Austerity March with dirty results.

Bend It Like Beckett
Monday Jun 08, 2015
Monday Jun 08, 2015
Bend It Like Beckett. As in Samuel Beckett. But, have no fear, there's little in the high brow stakes to make you sneer. Instead, we celebrate the embracing of deliberate discomfort in order to achieve betterment. Be it donning shoes a few sizes too small to avoid creases. Or enduring nasty niffs in order to find love or a sparkling car. - In Scintillating Situations in Your City, Sylvia Silversmith informs us about the highlights for London Pride as well as the lowdown on the annual Sardine Festival in Lisbon. - With National Sweden Day having taken place at the weekend, Dukey decided to tackle the vile state of his Volvo. But, despite the beautiful sheen - the stench left by the ordeal was decidedly mean. Find out more in the welcome return of "What smells in Dukey's car?" - And, talking of smells, is there such a thing as "The Smells Police"? Marsha explores this very question in "Overheard". - Festival Season is nearly underway. We trek down to Penge to discover just how dirty Slutty Sue plans on getting in many a field around Britain and the continent this summer. All of this and ever so slightly more.

The Greatest Title We've Ever Forgotten
Monday Jun 01, 2015
Monday Jun 01, 2015
It’s a mystery.
A tremendous loss has been suffered on our show.
We had a great title for this week’s podcast.
Indeed, it may have been the greatest title the Dukey Radio Show has ever come up with.
But, it vanished from our minds.
Everyone involved with our programme was informed about this remarkable this remarkable achievement in the arena of podcast themes and celebrated its brilliance.
By the following morning, however, the unprecedentedly witty bit of wordplay had departed all our respective supplies of grey matter.
Was it due to paranormal intervention?
Quite possibly.
There’s a lot of it about.
Irene, and her long suffering husband Roy, have been experiencing an unwelcome presence in their bedroom and her banter will ensure that you’ll never think of kebabs in the same way again.
In “Scintillating Situations in Your City”, Sylvia informs Dukey about highbrow theatre and lowly coffee. Or, rather, how to get great coffee from decidedly lowly location.
“Cover of a Cover” is back by popular demand and examines The Go Go’s 1982 classic “Vacation”.
Slutty Sue has been cleaning. And this time it involves a sheleighleigh.
British Television Programme Grange Hill, and its less than savoury reception by certain parents, is featured in "Posh Pit".
And, Marsha discusses the similarities between Germans and comfortable shoe wearers in “Overheard”.

Sigh of the Times
Monday May 04, 2015
Monday May 04, 2015
The gang at The Dukey Radio Show are feeling a bit “blah” this week. And, as a result, there have been sighs being bandied about from a number of different directions of which the left and centre are merely two. But, have no fear, there’s no wallowing in the misery for you to hear. Dukey, Marsha & Sylvia cheer themselves up by questioning the appropriateness of hand kissing and the inappropriateness of booking tickets for Beckett season when feeling depressed. In addition, Slutty Sue does novel things with printer cartridges and a ringpiece gets rung in “Overheard”. All of this and the amazing revelation that Irene is a polyglot.

Roux the Day
Now, have you really assumed that The Dukey Radio Show would let a misspelling go? Frankly that’s disappointing. Because this week we’re replacing the flour and butter, the base of many a creamy sauce, and replaced them with a popular lemon-flavoured granulated cold remedy and whisky. You see, the gang are sampling a myriad of elixirs to cure all ills as Sylvia and Slutty Sue have not been feeling well of late. In addition, a London purveyor of a more common elixir is reviewed by Marsha in “Bean and Gone” but don’t think she’s going to answer the question of why the tables are bolted to the floor because she ain’t.
